The Cowboys brought more lawlessness to Dodge City, and the mayor soon contacted Wyatt Earp, who worked as a law enforcement officer in Wichita. Doc followed the law in Dodge City, but Wyatt ignored him, as some citizens found the friendship between Wyatt and Doc strange.
The Knuckleheads Saloon offered a nonsensical atmosphere focused on the music and characters of Wyatt Earp and his gang of outlaws. The music enthused the audience, held them under its spell in appreciative silence and animated them to spontaneous applause. The cattle trade moved to Dodge City and became the buffalo capital of the West; buffalo skins towered high over Front Street and waited for shipment. Dodge City has cemented its claim as the world's largest buffalo trading center and buffalo hide-out exporter, but has shifted its focus to other industries.
A few years later I was at Hays and saw about five times as many guitars on the wall as walls. I got news from a Kansas train station and everyone flocked to the depot to catch a glimpse of the cowboys and listen to their delicious music.
